Many people are unaware that chiropractors provide therapy that can help with shoulder and knee injuries or pain. Chiropractic care does focus quite a bit on the spine but also on proper function of the joints and muscles in the extremities. Any kind of misalignment throughout the body can prevent proper function and create pain by interfering with nerves. Let's take a closer look at chiropractic therapy for knees and shoulders.

Chiropractic for Knees

The knees are major weight-bearing joints in the body. The wear and tear on knee joints over time can lead to a number of issues that cause pain or lead to injury. One common cause of knee pain is arthritis. While chiropractic care can't "cure" arthritis, by restoring proper alignment and function to the knee, it can reduce pain and prevent further damage.

Chiropractic therapy can also be helpful in cases where misalignment of the knee joint has caused damage to the cartilage on the underside of the kneecap. A chiropractor can adjust the knee to correct the misalignment. This moves the knee back into correct position and restores proper function. Adjusting the knee back into proper alignment prevents additional damage to the tissue under the kneecap and relieves pain.

A chiropractor can also determine whether the cause of the knee pain is related to misalignment in other areas of the body, such as the hips or lower back. Misalignment, tightness or limited range of motion in the hips or lower back can create excess strain for the knee joint, resulting in knee pain. Adjusting and restoring proper function to the lower back and hips reduces the extra strain on the knees and relieves the related pain.

Chiropractic for Shoulders

The shoulder is the most flexible joint in the body with the widest range of motion. This wide range of motion and flexibility also make it the most unstable joint in the body. This instability make the shoulder more prone to injury, strain and stress that can result in pain. The arrangement of the muscles and ligaments surrounding the shoulder joint is complex. Misalignment in the joint can lead to serious injuries including rotator cuff tears and frozen shoulder.

A chiropractor can use a variety of techniques to determine where the misalignment is and correct it to restore proper function to the joint. A chiropractor can also determine whether the issue is truly in the shoulder at all. Much like the hips and lower back can cause problems with the knee, misalignments in the cervical vertebrae (particularly the upper cervical vertebrae) can present as pain in the shoulder.

Chiropractic therapy can be effective for relieving pain and correcting problems in areas other than the spine. Pain or problems with joints in the extremities such as knees and shoulders can also benefit from chiropractic adjustments.
